Better late than never. I was quite busy recently and thus I faild to announce one of my favourite tourneys in time. Nevertheless, there are at least 2 weeks left...

Theme: Any kind of problems using pawn battery.

Judge: not known yet.

Entries should be sent before September 15th 2004 to the following adress:

Examples below - some problems published on CCM for a longer time and some fresh threemovers for the inspiration.

Joza Tucakov
3rd Place Liga Problemista 1997

1.Rh4! zz

1...Bh5! 2.f3+ e3 3.gxh5#
1...Bf5! 2.f3+ e3 3.gxf5#
1...e3 2.g5+ Be4 3.fxe3#
1...c3 2.e3+ Kc4, Kd3 3.Se5, Bxb5#
1...Ra5 2.g5 th. 3.f3#, 2...c3 3.bxa5#
1...Rc5 2.g5 th. 3.f3#, 2...c3 3.bxc5#
1...R~b 2.g5 th. 3.f3#, 2...c3 3.b5#
1...Rxb4 2.g5 th. 3.f3#, 2...c3 3.Rxb4#

The key sets up the second masked pawn battery. Both are emplyed three times, after random moves of black pieces and then after their corrections.

Michail Marandjuk
4th Prize Mat 1975

1.Bb1! th. 2.Rxh4! th. 3.c4# 2...Se5, Sf4+ 3.R(x)f4#
1...Bxf6 2.Bxf6! th. 3.c3# 2...Se5,Sf4+ 3.R(x)f4#
1...Bxd6 2.c3+ Ke5 3.c4#
1...hxg3 2.c4+ Kg4, Kf4 3.c5#

After obvious key there is a threat using critical rook move and pawn battery mate. The same strategy is contained in the first variation. The other pair of variations employ distant selfblocks and subsequent double play of white pawn batteries. Very thematical, isn't it?

György Bakcsi
5th Place Hungary - GDR 1985

1.Sa3! th. 2.Rxd2+ Kxa1 3.Sb3#
1...Rg3 2.Sd3 th. 3.c5#
1...Rg4 2.Se4 th. 3.c5#
1...Rg8 2.Sb7 th. 3.c5#
1...Rg7 2.Sd7 th. 3.c5#
1...Rg6 2.Se6 th. 3.c5#
1...dxc3 2.Bxc3 th. 3.Ra1#, Rxd2#

Any move of bRg5 is a defence against threat as it opens bishop line. However, it also gives up masked guard on wB and thus potentially allows 2.Sc5~ unblocking pawn batery. Then it turns out that specific arrivals of bR carry dual avoidance affects and knight jumping away must jump in fact very precisely.

Valentin Rudenko
Michail Marandjuk

1st Prize Die Schwalbe 1989

1.Rxf7? th. 2.Rxf6#
1...Bxe5!

1.bxc7? th. 2.c8Q#
1...Bxd5!

1.Qc5! th. 2.Qxc6 th. 3.Qxf6,Qd7#, 2...fxe5 3.Rxf7#
1...Bxd5 2.Rxf7 th. 3.Rxf6#, 2...Bxf7 3.e6#
1...Bxe5 2.bxc7 th. 3.c8Q#, 2...Bxc7 3.d6#

Pawn halfbattery is created by the key. It turns into pawn battery by means of annihilation of one of pawns. Black bishops are lured away by silent sacrifices and then their line of action to the battery line is cut by mating pawns.

Hubert Gockel
1st Prize Schach 1993

1.Qc6! th. 2.Sxg5+ fxg5 3.Qf6#
1...Rf7 2.e5 A th. 3.d6# B, 2...Bd6 a 3.Rg3# C
       2...S~, fxe5 3.Sd4#, Sxg5#
1...Rxh6 2.d6 B th. 3.Rg3# C, 2...Bxd6 a 3.e5# A
       2...Kxg4 3.Bxe2#
1...Bd6 2.e5 th. 3.Rg3#, 2...Bxe5, Sd4 3.d6#, Sxd4#

Here we see the pawn halfbattery again, diagonal one, and also the outcome is very different. Djurasevic cycle in the form of threemover variations is known as Djura-Gockel too.
