19th TT Chess Composition Microweb C 2.2.2006

Our previous 18th TT Chess Composition Microweb was dedicated to series helpmates with more phases. It seems that its theme was too simple as I have got more than 4 dozens of problems. The judge will have a hard time and we cannot expect the judgement very soon.

Nevertheless, there is no reason to stop regular cycle of theme tourneys and wait until the previos tourney is closed. I have been thinking about theme for the 19th TT for a long time. My files are full of interesting ideas and the keep coming. But theme should be not only interesting, but also able to be shown in the relatively short timeframe. So finally, I got the inspiration from one of Eretreia tourneys.

More precisely, it was Grappa tourney, that asked for h#2 with the first moves by both sides played by queens. The outcome was interesting and so I thought... what about trying something similar with fairy pieces?

Examples and a few thoughts

Theme of the tourney is in a sense simpler than that of Grappa in Eretria. In orthodox helpmates you usually have at most one queen of each colour on board. In problems competing in this tourney you might have as much fairy pieces of type X as you want. Moreover, e.g. you may do every pair of first moves with different pieces, so that there is enough flexibility in possibilities.

It is useful to remind you that your helpmates needn't be in integer number of moves, i.e. white may start. In that case also the first moves of white and then black must be by the same piece X. Also, as examples with neutral units show, neutral thematical pieces X might be used by both sides in first moves.

Look at the examples below an see what was already done. I am sure there are many-many new ideas possible. If you have any question, just ask.

So far we have published on CCM thematical examples using the following thematical fairy pieces:
