989 Pat a Mat 31 - December 2000

Comment on original for solving:
Few pieces - lesser problems? Fairies are simpler today, considering number of pieces on the board, but used fairy elements may prepare hard time to our solvers.

Not 989 - they have already some lion feeling, I think. Three phase formal theme with almost all moves included looks like simple mechanism.

990 Pat a Mat 31 - December 2000

Comment on original for solving:
Circe Assassin of 990 may be well explained with the help of set play. 1...Vexe8(Sf1) removes Vf1 from the board. Also Re6 leaves pc6, White can mate by 2.Qc2# as Black has no longer defence 2.Vxc6(pc2) with removal of queen, of course, 2...Kxc2(Dd1)?? isn't enough. The main content is shown in try and solution with "cyclone" theme.

991 Pat a Mat 31 - December 2000

Comment on original for solving:
Elephants of 991 are very agile pieces, white one needs to tame black one (stalemate him), for that sake he promotes second (non-royal) elephant from his own pawn left on 7nd rank thanks to Sentinelles condition in 2nd move.

992 Pat a Mat 31 - December 2000

Comment on original for solving:
Only one mating position exists in fact with material and condition of 992 - in orthogonal (e. g. wKCc1, wKCc2, bKc6, holes b5, b6, b7, c7, d7, d6, d5) and diagonal version - it only remains to place them well on the board.

993 Pat a Mat 31 - December 2000

Comment on original for solving:
Finally, one of 993 solutions, weaker one, is: 1.Sxb7=bp(pc6) 2.b5 ... 5.b2 6.bxc1=bS 7.Sh6 8.Sg7=bp Jd8=wD#. The other solution has the same first move.
