Award of 22nd TT Spisska Borovicka C 21.10.2010

This is the award by Juraj Lörinc of TT that was announced on CCM too.

There were 26 entries this year. Thanks to the non-Cyclone theme plus required Umnov move majority of them were helpmates, but the number of direct mates was non-negligible too. As almost all of them were orthodox, I was not fully comfortable with idea of judging them singlehandedly. Fortunately Marjan Kovačević from the neighbouring balcony has helped me - thanks, Marjan - although the final decision is my responsibility after all.

After some deliberations I have decided to be rather strict as far as the number of Prizes and Honourable Mentions is concerned. The quality of entries did not fully match the quantity. Yet, many helpmates might have some chances elsewhere (if original enough).

So, here we go (counted-down, as usually):

7th Commendation: Yosi Retter
While the cyclic content is impressive (in fact combinations 4 over 2), there is the only humble Umnov move present.

6th Commendation: Gerard Smits
Cyclic Zilahi with triple Umnov capture by pawn, unfortunately differently motivated: block of hurdle, hurdle moving into place and closing bishop line.

5th Commendation: Vasyl Dyachuk
Lačný cycle in hybrid problem has reminded me of Caillaud's hybrids of orthodox-Circe, otherwise it would be much higher.

4th Commendation: Aaron Hirschenson
Cycle of duals after Umnov defences.

3rd Commendation: Menachem Witztum
This helpmate with cycle of white moving pieces stands out thanks to the delayed type of Umnov.

2nd Commendation: Yosi Retter
Again cycle of duals after Umnov defences, but with some additional tries having thematic mates as threats.

1st Commendation: Alexandr Semenenko & Valerij Semenenko
There is a partial predecessor (Trommler & Feather, Probleemblad 2006), but the mechanism is sufficiently different here.

2nd Honourable Mention: Paz Einat & Ofer Comay
Probably the hardest to see cycle of the tourney: cycle of defense motifs (capture unguard, check, direct guard) with regard to additional themes contained in defences (Umnov moves, capture by pawn battery, gate opening for wQ).

1st Honourable Mention: Chris Handloser
The most intensive entry from the Umnov point of view: all mates are thematical. The cycle is also clean, in three phases cyclically two defences are met by the same mates. Clean work.

2nd Prize Marcos Roland
Although there are multiple similar problems, none of them featured Umnov moves in B1. It is actually constructional help as it is easier to determine the order of black moves, but as it was in the spirit of the tourney...

1st Prize: Michal Dragoun
While the number of fairy pieces is quite large, the mechanism and the thematical achievement is impressive. Cycle of functions of three white Chinese pieces guarding g8 in the diagram position (including cyclic Zilahi) and twice Umnov move in all solutions!

Congratulation to all winners!
